Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are great companion birds. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are best suited to families with a variety of members. They can easily become bored and find ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. Macaws that aren't socialized can become aggressive and even bite. It is essential to establish clear boundaries so the macaw does not feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who are fond of playing, climbing and play. They require 2 to 3 hours a day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They enjoy playing games, listening to music and learning new tricks. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as well as local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a great pet, they also make loving pets for children.
Despite their adorable nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a nuisance to those living near. They are capable of high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be startled by their noise.
Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining sex. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. This isn't a simple process, and it's important that the owner is patient and realizes that this is not a task to be taken lightly. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process, and help correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, activists hoped that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the ocean.
Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They overexert her with high-speed circle and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor, on a plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the remainder of her life receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and connect with their families until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita many are hopeful that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has pledged to move the whale from her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the beloved whale who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
